The Coastside CERTs are a force to be reckoned with! This weekend, 31 new CERTs graduated. There are currently 600 active CERTs, ready to respond to a disaster on the coast. 🪓More than 2,000 people are on the Coastside CERT roster. If you are rostered, you will receive CERT updates and safety information, and there is no commitment. Your data is protected. To find out more, head to CoastsideCERT.com. Quemamos 4 acres en el bosque Soquel Demonstration State Forest. Nuestros objetivos eran reducir el peligro de incendio y mejorar la salud de los bosques. Seguiremos quemando pequeñas áreas en este bosque en los próximos años. 🌲🌲🌲
Our first prescribed fire 🔥 in Soquel Demonstration State Forest was a success. We burned 4-acres of redwood forest understory in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Thank you to all community members who attended and learned about the benefits of #GoodFire. #CaWx
CAL FIRE CZU has conducted 3 prescribed fires on
TomKat Ranch northeast of Pescadero. 🔥 The first was in October 2021, the second was in February 2021, and the third was in October 2022. Ranch Manager Mark Biaggi describes the impact of the first two prescribed fires on the soil and vegetation at the ranch. 🌳🐄 #GoodFire #CaWx
Our Sheep Camp Prescribed Fire on San Francisco Public Utilities Commission watershed was a success! This prescribed burn was performed on October 4, 2022. Thanks to all participating agencies, CAL FIRE/San Mateo County Fire, Woodside Fire Protection District, Redwood City Fire Department, CAL FIRE SCU 🚁 Copter 913, PG&E, and
@PGE_SFPeninsula and Kings Mountain Fire Brigade. 🚒 Watch this video to learn more.
CAL FIRE CZU Battalion Chief and Incident Commander-Trainee Bob Simmons shows us how the TomKat Ranch Prescribed Fire burned the eucalyptus understory while leaving the trees intact. Eucalyptus drop a lot of material, and that material dries out and accumulates on the ground. By burning the understory, we're getting rid of that risk and leaving the tree, which is green and less prone to catching in a wildfire. 🌳

Burning also gets rid of the ladder fuels hanging off of the eucalyptus, which reduces the chance of the fire getting into the tree tops, which makes it much harder to contain.
Watch this raw video to see how a prescribed fire in a eucalyptus grove can burn the understory and get rid of decaying ground leaf litter. This was the TomKat Ranch prescribed fire near Pescadero.
The 2nd Annual Mavericks Ocean Safety Summit was a huge success! Dozens of surfers took part in this 2-day workshop at Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay. The summit offered instruction on first aid and water rescue techniques. 🛥️ It's critical information for surfers who can provide help to anyone visiting the coast before first responders arrive. Thank you to all allied agencies, including Pillar Point Harbor Patrol, Coastside Fire Protection District, Mavericks Volunteer Water Rescue, US Coast Guard Golden Gate, US Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco, CA State Lifeguards, and San Mateo County Parks.
